Can I use patterned paper that I bought at a craft store in my illustrations/collage for a picture book or is that something I would need to get permission for?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Hmmm, I'm not sure. I hope an illustrator or designer chimes in.

Carrots on this board has a PB, Mama's New Do, in which the artist used very pretty paper for the clothes, the border, other elements. See:,204,203,200_.jpg   She probably used whatever stashes of patterned paper she had. I don't see any mention of purchasing rights on the copyright page.

In contrast, for my cover of Bound, the yellow/orange is patterned and my designer purchased the rights to use it.

Thank you! I just found an earlier post which was really helpful. It's amazing how hard it is to find an answer to this question.  I'm even having a hard time finding out how to contact the manufacturer (I believe Recollections is made by Michaels.)  Copyright does seem to be an issue with using this kind of paper for illustrations
