Help with Portfolio

Discussion started on

I've been working on my dummy books and portfolio really hard this year.  I haven't gone to a seasonal scbwi conference since 2007 so the closer it gets the more nervous I'm getting.  I think I'm just a few images short but I am getting stuck on what those should be.  I am working on another one with the elephant to show continuity, and this big colonial farm animal ball because I don't even know why, I just love the idea.  Maybe I need more semi detailed characters but with less background?  Or some characters that are grumpy or mad?  Move something from my sketchbook page?  Or am I just getting overly nervous?
here's my portfolio so far:

Hello, Heather! I'm not a professional (not yet, anyway ;)), but I'm more than happy to give some feedback on your portfolio/website!

Overall, I think you have a wonderful variety of illustrations and sketchbook pages to show, and I think you may just be a little nervous! I love the different styles you draw the characters in on your illustration page, and I think you have a good range of versatility. Everything looks pretty different, but similar enough that you can tell it's still you who drew them, which is important! Personally, I adore the pieces of the alligator/flamingo, the elephant, and the dog/grasshopper!

I do agree that you might want to include a few more characters with varying emotions; a lot of stories show their characters in some kind of struggle/conflict that builds to a resolution, and you'll need to show how they react during those struggles.

In terms of backgrounds, I think you have a good balance between spot illustrations and full-page and spread illustrations, so if you add any more pieces, I think it'd be up to you if they need backgrounds or not ::-)

That's all I have to say, really! I think you're in pretty good shape so far, but again, I'm not a professional, so you may also want to hear other feedback as well. Hope I was able to help! Best of luck to you! :flowers2

You seem to have a lot of styles - I'd like to see a bit more consistency (ie a few more in each of your best styles & then organize it so that you have a section for each style - at least 5 per style...). I love the flamingo & alligator on skateboard/scooter - I think the unicorn is the same style... I'd love love love to see more of this style. The turtle in the chair & the cowboy/cowgirl tell me you are really great at details/backgrounds as well but they seem to be in a different style. I'd love to see how you'd handle backgrounds in the style of the flamingo/alligator.  I'll admit, I just want to see more of those two... do you have a story for them?
