In-Person visits to publishing houses

This may be a silly question. Since I started with SCBWI, it seems to be stressed that the way to get your 'foot in the door' for illustrators  (or in my case, author/illustrator) is to submit queries by mail or send postcards. However, I was just looking at "The Book", and under "SCBWI Illustrator's Guide" it makes an inference that it's possible to PHYSICALLY visit publishing houses with leave-behinds - perhaps a copy portfolio to leave and pick up later. Does anyone have any experience with this? I'm old-school, and this is the way things used to be done. I was under the impression that I'd be considered bothersome now if I did that, but now after reading that chapter, I'm not sure...I'm planning a trip up to Boston in a little while, and I'm wondering if I should call ahead or email and see if it's possible to meet the art director of a few places?
