Call Me Gebyanesh

Synopsis

My book, CALL ME GEBYANESH (say it like this: Geb-YA-nesh), is a story about a 7-year-old girl who emigrates from Ethiopia to Israel with her family. The story is based on the real-life experiences of co-author, Gebyanesh Addisu. On the first day of school in Jerusalem, her teacher, who has trouble pronouncing 'Gebyanesh,' changes her name to Rakhel. From then on, she is Gebyanesh at home and Rakhel in school--until she finds the courage to reclaim her name and her heritage. It's a universal immigrant story of struggling to fit into a new and entirely different culture from what one is used to.
