Dive into a tale of sacrifice, love, and unforeseen alliances in a mesmerizing fusion of fantasy and historical worlds. "The fisherman and sailors of Venice know the waters better than anyone though they merely glide on the surface; the deepworld of la Laguna is lost to memory. They have forgotten we were once all born of the sea. They have forgotten we once shared a language. They have forgotten when we all could control our hearts." It's 1501 and near Venice, Italy, 16-year-old mermaid Armida is torn between saving the ocean she loves and the traditions of her mer colony. And she doesn't even want to think about silver-scaled Rinaldo who seeks land with its possible answers about his mother. Armida has been a good merpup her whole life, but with the adults ignoring extinction-level perils, that’s about to change. When the agonizing Metamorphean Rites yank her out of childhood and onto land at sixteen, Armida vows she will never forsake the sea even though this choice may separate her from Rinaldo forever. With the environmental crisis devastating Marea worsening, and her brother missing, Armida faces living among the Terrans she loathes so she can uncover the forces determined to destroy Marea. Armida grapples with an impossible choice—save a single life or preserve the fragile ocean she loves. It may require more cooperation and unexpected allies than she could have ever predicted.

I've always loved art. My attraction to history came much later. But, I admit I was a bit of a math nerd in high school. Okay maybe a complete math nerd. As that kid, I knew the biggest reason some struggled with math was because of the way it was taught. I want to encourage girls' interest in STEM subjects and I believe we should teach the joy AND the practical. As an avid reader, then and now, I see novels as a way to accomplish that (and without leaving art or history behind.) From tracing the Möbius strip in a Time-Life book on mathematics when I was a little girl, to a lifetime of fascination with space, STEM subjects built upon my interest in art and history and introduced me to the world and ideas in a way that opened my mind to endless possibilities. I want those endless possibilities for every girl.
