About Mark A. Hicks
Mark A. Hicks is a semi-retired freelance artist and illustrator. He created thousands of works of art for children’s books, magazines, greeting cards, and a whole lot more over the course of his long career. Now he creates artwork mostly as a hereditary cancer awareness and prevention advocate and volunteer.
The Inspiration for this Book
“Explain it to me like I’m six.” That’s a quote from an adult. And it was the inspiration for this book. In 2018 I became a hereditary cancer advocate after my child and late wife both tested positive for the same inherited pathogenic BRCA2 gene mutation. As a hereditary cancer advocate, I have found that, sadly, many adults lack a basic understanding of genomic science. So I created something to introduce little ones to the subject so that hopefully when they grow up they won’t be totally clueless. The book was created with the help of an assistant professor, who is also a certified genetic counselor and hereditary cancer advocate.
