Kobee is a very smart and adventurous manatee. He takes a rare summertime trip from Florida all the way up to Cape Cod, Massachusetts. As his journey unfolds, Kobee weaves manatee fun facts throughout his story.
It’s now late September and because he’s warm blooded, Kobee needs to get home to Blue Spring before winter or he’ll die from the cold. He gestures farewell to New England and begins his long action packed trip home.
Soon Kobee meets Tess, a lost seahorse who asks all kinds of questions. She wants warmer water too. Kobee tells Tess to, “hop on.” As they journey south, it’s not long before they come upon Pablo, a hermit crab who loses his shell chasing them down. Pablo got “carried away” from his southern home and “couldn’t get back.” Kobee tells Pablo to “Jump on.” “We’ll find you a shell, and get you home.”
They whoosh south. Then as Pablo searches the ocean floor for a new shell, a big shark was about to enjoy him for dinner. But Kobee intervenes and saves him. All three form a strong friendship.
Is it finally time to celebrate? Not when a fast moving boat suddenly appears and just misses hitting Kobee. But that drama doesn’t defuse Kobee’s determination to get home. Then just around the next bend, the water turns even warmer and hundreds of manatees appear. “We’re in Blue Spring State Park!” Kobee said.
Yes – it’s time to celebrate. Kobee Manatee grabs his guitar as everyone shouts, “We love you Kobee!”
