Winner of The Author's Zone TAZ Award for "Best Children's Book of 2017", this bilingual (English/Spanish) picture book, based on actual events, explores the reasons that prompt families to make life-changing moves in their lives. It also highlights the many different kinds of emotions all people have. A good book for all ages.
Este libro ilustrado bilingüe se basa en una historia verdadera y explora a los hechos que ocurren en muchas familias que tienen que hacer mudanzas que cambian la vida. También destaca las varias emociones diferentes que todos tenemos.
Here is a book that can teach your children about a number of things. Since it is a bi-lingual story written for children. it can introduce children to either Spanish or English. Since it is about a family coming to America, it can teach children about immigration. And since the mother in the story cries for a number of reasons, it can teach children about a range of emotions. This is simply a marvelous book. I urge you to put it in a child's hands today.
I found this masterfully crafted book amazing on all counts: touching story, nostalgic graphics, and bilingual content. The story would be ideal for reading to preschoolers and early readers, to give them insight into the wrenching immigrant experience and the emotion family separation entails. It's also great for older readers (like me) who want to hone their Spanish skills. I found it helpful to read the Spanish version on the right-hand pages, then check my understanding with the corresponding English version on the left. Michelle Bowden Dobi's illustrations evoke memories of times past for me. In my opinion, they perfectly convey the tone of the book.
