Readers eagerly awaiting the second book in
Coville's Unicorn Chronicles will be richly rewarded for their patience with
this volume. Into the Land of the Unicorn (1994) was excellent, and this
book is even better. When Cara volunteers to return to Earth to bring her
grandmother, the Wanderer, back to Luster, she learns it won't be a simple
matter. She must cross the wilds of Luster, risking capture by the delvers and
by Beloved, her ancient ancestor who has vowed to find a gateway into Luster and
destroy the unicorns. Cara is joined again by her old friends Thomas the Tinker,
the Squijim, the Dimblethum, and Lightfoot, whose roles have expanded and who
seem less cartoonish than in the first book. Coville has increased the urgency
and pace of the quest and the danger to Cara and her friends, and he makes the
pain of Cara's confrontation with her father and Beloved exceptionally vivid.
Readers will again find Coville's mix of adventure, revenge, and loyalty
irresistible and will fervently hope they won't have to wait another six years
for the book Coville hints about in the final paragraphs of the story. Chris
