Guidelines for Manuscript Consultations

(Scroll down for portfolio consultation guidelines)

You will receive two forms of written feedback:  notes written directly on your manuscript and a detailed evaluation form which highlights your story’s strengths and weaknesses. You will also receive a ten-minute follow-up phone call with your reviewer to ask any additional questions.

Please follow all the guidelines listed below. Failure to do so may result in your missing out on all or part of your consultation. No refunds will be given for manuscript consultations.

Instructions for those who already have a manuscript reviewer assigned  (you selected one when you registered)

– Once your registration is complete, email the first ten pages of your manuscript as a WORD DOC attachment  to manuscripts@scbwi.org by June 10, 2020. Manuscripts received after the June 10 deadline will not be forwarded to reviewers. All submissions are final. Once you send in your pages you may not send in updates.

– In the subject line of your email place the name of your reviewer first, followed by your name, the name of your book, and the genre. For example: Sara Sargent – Suzanne Collins – THE HUNGER GAMES – YA

– You must name your WORD DOC using the following format: Your full name – Genre of your manuscript. For Example: Mary Smith – Middle Grade

– Cover pages do not count in the ten-page limit. Please make sure your phone number and email address is on your cover page. If you don’t include your contact info, you may not receive your written notes or follow-up phone call.

– Please include a short synopsis for MG, YA and nonfiction books. The synopsis does not count as part of the ten-page limit. (PB submissions do not need to include a synopsis).  Include your synopsis in the same WORD DOC as your ten-pages.

– You will receive your marked-up pages and a written evaluation form a few days prior to your scheduled call.

– Your reviewer will call you for your follow-up phone call on the day and time you selected when you registered. You must be available at that time. If you miss your call, we are not able to reschedule.

PLEASE NOTE: Your reviewer may call you from a phone number that shows as “Unknown Caller” on caller ID. Please be aware of this and answer your phone at the scheduled time.

– If you have any questions, contact Kim Turrisi at kimturrisi@scbwi.org. Do not send Kim your manuscripts. All manuscripts must be sent to manuscripts@scbwi.org

Manuscript consultation  instructions for those who are registered but DO NOT have a reviewer assigned:

We will do our best to assign you to a reviewer who is a good match for your manuscript. However, in order to do so, we need everyone to follow the guidelines below. Failure to do so may result in your missing out on all or part of your consultation. No refunds will be given for manuscript consultations.

– Email the first ten pages of your manuscript as a WORD DOC attachment to manuscripts@scbwi.org by June 10, 2020. Manuscripts received after the June 10 deadline will not be forwarded to reviewers. All submissions are final. Once you send in your pages you may not send in updates.

– In the SUBJECT LINE of your email put the following information in the following order: your full name, the genre of your book (Picture Book, Chapter Book, Middle Grade, YA, Nonfiction) You may also include sub-genres such as fantasy, sci-fi, graphic novel, etc. If you already have an agent and do not wish to be assigned to one, add the term,

For Example: Mary Smith – Nonfiction Picture Book – Agented

– We will do our best to match you with a reviewer who represents or acquires your genre.

 – You must name your WORD DOC using the following format: Your full name – Genre of your manuscript.

For Example: Mary Smith – Nonfiction Picture Book

 – Cover pages do not count in the ten-page limit.

 –  Make sure both your phone number and your email address is on your cover page. If you don’t include your contact info, you may not receive your written notes or follow-up phone call.

 – Please include a short synopsis for middle grade, young adult, and nonfiction books. The synopsis does not count as part of the ten-page limit. (Picture book submissions do not need to include a synopsis). Put the synopsis in the same WORD DOC as your ten pages so that you are only emailing us one document. The synopsis can be either the very first page or the very last.

– You will receive an email several weeks after the June 10 deadline with the name of your reviewer and the time and day of your follow-up phone call. Because of the sheer volume of consults taking place we are unable to make changes to reviewers and phone dates.

 – You will receive your marked-up pages and a written evaluation form by August 1, 2020.
