AWARDS, GRANTS, SCHOLARSHIPS

The following SCBWI awards and scholarships provide winners with free tuition to the Big Five-Oh conference.

Orr Fantasy Award 

 

Awarded to middle grade and young adult writers working in the fantasy or science fiction genre. Members may submit the first ten pages of an SFF manuscript.

BIPOC Scholarship

 

All expense paid tuition to the Summer Conference plus one free conference intensive for Black, Indigenous, and People of color. 25 scholarships are available – five reserved for women of color. In addition, an additional 10 illustrators will be selected from the BIPOC submission pool and awarded free entry into the Portfolio Showcase so they may apply for the Ezra Jack Keats Award (see below). The BIPOC award is sponsored by Christopher Paul Curtis, as well as other anonymous member donations. 

 

Applicants may submit an artist statement (250 words or less) and a one-sentence logline about their project. Non-members may apply. For more information and to apply click HERE.

Ezra Jack Keats Award

 

In conjunction with the Portfolio Showcase, the SCBWI will award $2,500 to one promising BIPOC illustrator early in their career. Applicants may not have published more than four books, and must submit work to the Portfolio Showcase at the Summer Conference and check the box to be considered for the Ezra Jack Keats Award. Illustrators who need financial assistance to enter the Portfolio Showcase may apply for a  BIPOC Scholarship (see above). 10 illustrators will be selected from the BIPOC submission pool and awarded free entry into the Portfolio Showcase so they may apply for the Ezra Jack Keats Award.

Need-Based Scholarship

 

This new scholarship will provide all expense paid tuition to the Summer Conference for any SCBWI member experiencing financial hardship.  Recipients will receive base tuition and one free conference intensive. Applicants may submit an artist statement (250 words or less) and a one-sentence logline about their project. SCBWI members only.

Student Illustrator Scholarship

 

Conference tuition for full-time university students studying illustration. Students may submit a description in 250 words or less of why you wish to attend the SCBWI Conference and three samples of your children’s book-style illustrations, along with a letter of recommendation and a photo of current student ID.

Student Writer Scholarship 

 

Conference tuition for full-time university students in an English or creative writing program. One winner will be chosen from a graduate or doctoral program, and one winner will be chosen from an undergraduate program. Students must submit a description (250 words or less) about why you wish to attend the conference, as well as up to ten pages of an unpublished manuscript. Student ID must be provided.
