We know that a diverse range of books offers "windows and mirrors" to support equity, inclusion, and social-emotional growth. But can multiple perspective help academic achievement, too? It can, and Common Core standards are the tool. In this hands-on workshop, we will dive into selected standards and examine ways they not only support, but require engagement with diverse perspectives. Working with fiction- and nonfiction at different grade levels, authors and educators will come away more equipped to build the case for equity and inclusion, improve author-teacher collaboration, and even challenge book bans on academic grounds. Participants are encouraged to bring a range of books (their own and others) to use as mentor texts. - IN-PERSON- Saturday, November 18th, 2023 - Ann Arbor District Library, Downtown Branch, 3rd floor free space meeting room
