SCBWI Oregon: Level Up! with David Hohn

Apr 08, 2025

Online event

BEYOND THE MANUSCRIPT: THE HIDDEN CHOICES ILLUSTRATORS MAKE ⭐ In this session you will learn about the visual narrative choices made by illustrators that are often overlooked by readers. Camera point of views, character designs, secondary narratives, even color choices are all intentional, yet never call attention to themselves. But once you know what to look for the reader is opened up to a new level of appreciation of the power of the picture book format. David will use examples from his own books as well as other best selling books to show how illustrators do this. ⭐ David Hohn is an illustrator and instructor based in Portland Oregon. Clients include Scholastic Publishing, Penguin Random House, Charlesbridge, Astra, Sleeping Bear, Sasquatch, Waterbrook Multnomah and Bloomsbury Publishing. His work has been recognized by Society of Illustrators, The Original Art Show, 3x3, Society of Illustrators Los Angeles and SCBWI. His books have received starred reviews from both Kirkus and School Library Journal. He teaches the picture book illustration track at Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) in Portland and online at Society of Visual Storytelling (www.svslearn.com) and its associated Children's Book Pro program. ⭐ Registration closes April 5th. A recording of the event will be available to registered attendees for 30 days.
