Jeni Bassett knew she wanted to illustrate books when she was 8 years old. At that time, she was taking art classes from her mother and sketching all the animals she could find, whether her pets (dogs, cats, parakeets, mice, bunnies, newts, frogs, hamsters, gerbils, turtles, crabs, guinea pigs, and a Japanese chicken named Wooton) or the baby wild birds and squirrels she rescued. When Jeni was 16 and still in high school, she illustrated her first published book, Bunches and Bunches of Bunnies. This book was inspired by her two bunnies, Mr. and Mrs. Rafferty, and their remarkably large family. By age 25, Jeni had published 10 books, and her career was only beginning. Jeni is now an internationally recognized artist who has illustrated over 35 children’s books. She is still inspired by her pets, which currently include chickens, bunnies, a turkey, and a cat.
