I am a published author and illustrator working on comics and picture books (and I’m even writing a middle grade Graphic Novel!). I love to laugh and I love to cry and I really love to do both in the same story.
What kind of children’s books inspire me? Those stories that leave us changed forever. The books we delight in reading and rereading endlessly. Recently I presented my daughter with the carefully preserved books I have been keeping since I was a kid and I was brought back instantly to a certain time and place. The perfect books.
Other things that inspire me: Graphic novels, Lynda Barry, Hervé Tullet, my creative friends, brave people, shy people, scaredy-cats, making art with kids, being kind, baking cookies, reading mystery novels, walking… I can find inspiration anywhere I look.
When I’m not writing and illustrating kids books, I also run my online shop, Moon and Sparrow – which I stock with whimsical, colourful maps and funny custom portraits. I also teach art to kids, which constantly reminds me why I like loose, imperfect lines. (They’re more fun to do!)
I am inspired by colour, layers, and texture. I often change up my medium, working with pencils, acrylic paints, digital colouring, and gouache because I think each project calls for its own set of tools. But you will always find an element of humour, honesty, and most of all, storytelling in my work.
In my free time you will find me reading, creating piles of art all over the house, walking through the streets and alleys of Montreal with my rescue dog Indy (who does not listen or come when I call her) and camping in the woods in our 35 year-old camper van, Lady Luck.
