In the third grade I did a drawing of a chariot and gave it to my mother. I wrote on it, “I want to be an artist when I grow up.” In the fifth grade, I got in trouble for writing stories during Mrs. O’Neal’s math class. I told my parents, “Don’t worry, I’m going to be a writer when I grow up!” I went to Parson’s School of Design in Greenwich Village. I never left. I still live right around the corner from school!
Some fun facts about me…
I have three daughters, a husband, and a very dramatic dog named Mufasa. We call him Moof.
One of my favorite books is Becoming Naomi León by Pam Muñoz Ryan.
I do a lot of sketches on post-its!
I’m always drawing something.
Before I did children’s books, I did political and editorial illustrations.
I love my job, working at home in my pajamas, illustrating, writing children’s books, and visiting schools. (I usually don’t wear pajamas when I go to schools.)
