Illustrator Gallery - David Malcolm
I grew up in East Moline, IL where my love of drawing and painting was nurtured by family, teachers, and painting lessons. I attended college at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, IL where I met my wife, Kim. As an undergraduate at IWU, I continued to develop my artistic toolbox, earning my B.F.A. in Painting/Illustration. Over the next decade, I dabbled in various unsatisfying art careers, which sapped my creative spark. Eventually I returned to school and earned a second bachelor’s degree in Computer Science at the University of Iowa. I then pursued my current career as a software developer and, feeling disillusioned with art, eschewed it completely.
Luckily, the drive to create transcends the conscious mind and after several years of not making art of any sort, “the itch” led me to a life drawing class at the local university. No longer having to use my art to live, this class re-lit my creative spark and now I pursue my dream of becoming a published children’s book illustrator.
Today I reside in Cedar Rapids, IA with my wife, who is a school social worker, and our three children (19, 15, and 10). In my day job, I write military communications software at Rockwell Collins and devote my free time to art.
