When: August 9-12 with optional Intensives on Monday, August 12
Where: JW Marriott at LA Live
Summer is approaching and that means SCBWI’s annual Summer Conference will soon be here. We’re excited to report that this year’s event features some of the brightest luminaries in children’s books! There will be keynote presentations from Mem Fox, Meg Medina, MT Anderson, Renee Watson, Christian Robinson, Raul the Third, Yuyi Morales, Darcy Rosenblatt, and Anna Shinoda. The Conference also features mainstage panels dedicated specifically to picture books, alternative publishing options, and creating books that matter, as well as panels of agents and editors who will offer insight direct from the publishing trenches.
Illustrators will have an opportunity to present their work to industry professionals at the Portfolio Showcase. A jury will select a winner and a runner up. The winner receives a paid trip to New York to meet with art directors. The Portfolio Showcase has launched many careers and we can’t wait to see who gets discovered this year.
All Conference participants will have a whopping seventy-two breakout sessions to choose from with dedicated tracks for illustrators, published authors, and nonfiction writers. This year, there are many sessions for self-published authors as well. Once again, there will also be a limited number of one-on-one manuscript and portfolio critiques by agents, editors, and art directors.
New for 2019
We have expanded the optional offerings on Monday, August 12. In addition to the full-day Illustrator’s Intensive and the full-day Pro Forum, participants can register for a full-day Consult & Craft Intensive. The morning session of this intensive features round-tables of eleven participants and one agent or editor. Each participant will get to read the first 500 words of their manuscript and receive ten to twelve minutes of direct feedback from the agent or editor facilitating their group. The afternoon session is a three-hour, deep dive into a specific area of the craft of writing for children. Imagine learning the craft of writing picture books directly from Mem Fox! Other deep-dive sessions will be taught by MT Anderson, Renee Watson, Lisa Yee, and agents and editors looking to acquire new material.
The Conference is an amazing opportunity to hone your craft, receive feedback on your work, learn about the publishing industry, and garner face time with the agents, editors, and art directors who bring children’s books into the world.
All the Conference information will be posted on the SCBWI website in late April. Registration opens on April 25th.
