ABOUT AIDAN CASSIE

  • While recently spending a year in Provence (admiring weathered shutters and speaking french poorly) I finished my debut picture book, Sterling, Best Dog Ever, forthcoming from FSG Books for Young Readers/Macmillan in spring 2018.

I studied visual communication and animation at Emily Carr University of Art and Design, and later at the Edinburgh College of Art. My first tale was not a book but a wordless animated short film, Sitting Next to Bernie (screened at festivals from Newfoundland to Brazil). With a degree in Media Arts I transitioned into character and product design before returning to my first love; illustrating children’s books (an art form that involves 5,368 less drawings than a six minute film).

With an affinity for deep moss, rain and rugged shores it was perhaps inevitable that I’d find myself on an island in the Salish Sea. My characters and their worlds teeter on every surface of my Salt Spring studio.
