ABOUT BETTYANN VANDEVENTER
Children’s books is a new genre for me, and I’m loving this writing journey with support from SCBWI, nationally and locally. I worked as a writer/reporter through most of my career, first, as a journalist for a mid-west newspaper, covering primarily education — a major university, colleges statewide and local public schools — then as the spokesperson for the state education department. Writing for children and acquainting myself with professionals and aspiring writers in this field has been inspirational and rewarding. I write picture books and middle-grade novels as well. As a social activist, I’m working for and hoping for a world that supports all children and their families.
Writing awards include the William Randolph Hearst Foundation, Journalism Awards Program, special merit in features writing, and Lee Enterprises, President’s Award, journalism.
