ABOUT CHRISTY HALE

  • Christy Hale has illustrated numerous award-winning books for children, including Elizabeti’s Doll (Lee & Low Books), an ALA Notable Book that Publisher’s Weekly called “ A slice of perfection” in a starred review. Hale made her debut as a picture book author with the publication of The East-West House: Noguchi’s Childhood in Japan. The lyrical text and mixed-media collage introduce readers to Isamu Noguchi, the 20th-century sculptor and designer. The East-West House was a Kirkus Best Book of 2009.  Christy’s second author-illustrator project, Dreaming Up: A Celebration of Building published in 2012 and was an ALA Notable, a Boston Globe Horn Book Non-fiction Honor winner, and an International Reading Association Honor winner, and was on many “best-of” lists.

Christy Hale has worked as a children’s book art director and book designer for over twenty-five years, both in-house at several NYC children’s book publishers and as a consulting art director for Lee & Low Books since the company’s beginning.
Christy Hale teaches an online course “Writing for Picture Books” through the illustration department at the Academy of Art in San Francisco. Hale lives in Palo Alto, California. She is available for school, library, museum, and other community presentations. Learn more about Hale’s work at christyhale.com. Contact her at christy@christyhale.com to schedule an event.
