ABOUT CHRISTY MIHALY

  • I began writing for young people after 25 years of practicing environmental and consumer protection law in California and Vermont. My 2020 picture book, Free for You and Me: What Our First Amendment Means, draws upon my law background to introduce kids to important concepts relating to our government and civil liberties. I’ve written more than two dozen books including the 2019 series “Shaping the Debate” for Rourke Educational Media–which introduces middle graders to the arguments and facts about topics from immigration to freedom of the press.

Hey, Hey, Hay! (A Tale of Bales and the Machines That Make Them) is a rhyming picture book about making hay — storing summer in a bale. Diet for a Changing Climate: Food for Thought, YA nonfiction co-written with Sue Heavenrich, offers high school readers information about how our diet affects our planet, and interesting options for changing what we eat. I do a range of writing: nonfiction, fiction, poetry, puzzles and games.

I’m a member of the Vermont Historical Society, and on the board of a concert series, have served as board chair for the Vermont River Conservancy and a local music school, and volunteer in elementary schools. I love going on long walks with my dog, and playing the cello (though not simultaneously).
