ABOUT CHRISTY MIHALY
-
I started writing for young people after 25 years of practicing environmental and public interest law. While my primary focus is nonfiction, I also write fiction and poetry. I’ve published more than two dozen works, including several picture books and a range of books for older readers. Books published in 2022 include Patience, Patches!, a dog’s-eye picture book about a new sibling; The Supreme Court and Us, a nonfiction picture book introducing young readers to the US Supreme Court; and The Ultimate Food Atlas, a National Geographic Kids book co-authored with Nancy Castaldo.
My 2021 picture book, Barefoot Books WATER: A Deep of Discovery, illustrated by Mariona Cabassa, which takes readers on a journey to explore the magic and power of water, has won numerous awards. Free for You and Me: What Our First Amendment Means (Albert Whitman 2020) draws upon my law background to introduce kids to important concepts relating to our government and civil liberties. The 2019 series “Shaping the Debate” (Rourke Educational Media) introduces middle graders to the arguments and facts about topics from immigration to freedom of the press.
Hey, Hey, Hay! (A Tale of Bales and the Machines That Make Them) is a rhyming picture book about making hay — storing summer in a bale. Diet for a Changing Climate: Food for Thought, YA nonfiction co-written with Sue Heavenrich, offers high school readers information about how our diet affects our planet, and interesting options for changing what we eat.
I live in Vermont, where I love going on long walks with my dog, and playing the cello (though not simultaneously).
