ABOUT CLAIRE LEWIS
I’m a picture book author/illustrator (and languages course book writer) living in Devon, UK. I have three boys and a very naughty but charming border terrier. My stories tend to be character-driven: I love designing new picture book characters both as illustrator and author, developing them visually and by imagining their voice through dialogue. I pitched my first picture book on stage in The Hook at my first SCBWI BI conference in 2019. Six of my badge designs were runners up in the conference badge competition and one of my illustrations was selected for the SCBWI BI Annual Advent Calendar 2019. In 2020 some of my picture book illustrations were selected for the final of the #PBParty Illustration Showcase, I was longlisted for the WriteMentor Children’s Novel & Picture Book Award, and awarded honourable mentions in Susanna Leonard Hill’s #Valentiny contest and Kaitlyn Leann Sanchez and Ciara O’Neal’s #SpringFlingKidLit contest (‘Best in Rhyme’). In September 2020, my hand-lettered ‘W’ was chosen to become part of the new logo for the SCBWI British Isles online publication ‘Words & Pictures’. Since then, picture book texts of mine have been awarded second place in the Little Tiger/Virtual Writers’ Weekend Picture Book competition (2021), shortlisted twice in the WriteMentor Children’s Novel & Picture Book Awards (2021 and 2022), and awarded first place in the Children’s Writers’ Group Birthday Competition 2021 (@childrenswrite1). A piece of my older fiction was shortlisted for the 2021 Searchlight Best Novel Opening for Children or Young Adults competition. In the summer of 2021 I was fortunate enough to be awarded a place on the WriteMentor Summer Mentoring programme, with Frances Tosdevin (‘The Bear and her Book’, ‘An Artist’s Eyes’) as my mentor. I’m a picture book author/illustrator based in Devon in the UK. I use traditional media for my illustrations (soft pencil, ink, pen, gouache, watercolour) but add layers and finishing touches in photoshop. I’ve been an SCBWI member for three years now and have greatly appreciated the SCBWI British Isles events for illustrators such as portfolio reviews and masterclasses. I’ve also attended various illustration events and classes at the House of Illustration in London. In 2019 six of my badge designs were runners up in the SCBWI BI conference badge competition and one of my illustrations was selected for the SCBWI BI Annual Advent Calendar. In 2020 some of my picture book illustrations were selected for the final of the #PBParty Illustration Showcase, and in September 2020 my hand-lettered ‘W’ was chosen to become part of the new logo for the SCBWI British Isles online publication ‘Words & Pictures’.
