ABOUT CINDY JENSON-ELLIOTT

  • Birth: Philadelphia, PA
As a child, I lived in Cody, Wyoming, various suburbs of Philadelphia, Palm Springs, CA, and La Jolla, CA.
I went to college at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, and to graduate school at San Diego State University in San Diego, California.

From the time I was 8 years old, I wanted to be a writer — a poet and a spy, I would tell people. I also loved celebrating and exploring the natural world, and the world of books.
As a very young child in Wyoming, on the edge of Yellowstone National Park, I was given free rein to explore outside. Later, living in suburban Philadelphia in the late 1960s, and in the air pollution ring surrounding Los Angeles, I wondered why few stars were visible, and why the rivers were said to be too polluted to even fall into. I was 8 years old when the first Earth Day was celebrated, and I was profoundly influenced by the environmental movement. As a teen and young adult, I was very influenced by my friends’ interest in the environment, and learned to backpack and snorkle, rock-climb and cross-country ski. To this day, being outside and writing are my two favorite things to do.
