ABOUT LAURIE THEURER

  • Laurie Theurer’s writing adventure began in 2012 at a writing conference in Geneva, Switzerland. She started writing flash fiction and picture books, as she loved the challenge of infusing very short stories with meaning and emotion. Since then, she’s experimented with short stories, poetry, middle grade, and is in the drafting stage for a YA novel. Her stories usually draw on childhood in California, her two years in Peace Corps Thailand, and the past 20+ years in Switzerland.

Swisstory: The Untold, Bloody, and Absolutely True History of Switzerland is her first book, illustrated by the incomparable Michael Meister, and published by Bergli Books in 2019.

ARTIST STATEMENT

  • Swisstory: The Untold, Bloody, and Absolutely True History of Switzerland had it humble beginnings as a proposed game about Swiss culture. Luckily, Richard Harvell at Bergli Books saw the potential for more and encouraged Laurie to try her hand at writing a humorous history of the country. After two years of research and searching for humor in the most unlikely of topics, Swisstory was born. A sequel is currently being imagined.

Whatever Laurie is writing, she’s completely addicted to that moment where mere words flow and meld into something magical.
