• Linda Zuckerman has been an editor of children’s books for more than 40 years. She has held executive editorial positions at Viking, HarperCollins and most recently at Harcourt, where she was the editorial director of her own imprint, Browndeer Press. During her lengthy career she has edited many outstanding books for children, including three that received the Caldecott Medal and two that were awarded Newbery Honor citations. For eleven years she was the director of the Pacific Northwest Children’s Book Conference (now defunct), sponsored by Portland State University. In addition, she is the author of a picture book, I Will Hold You ‘Til You Sleep, illustrated by Jon J Muth, and a young adult novel, A Taste for Rabbit, which was a 2008 Oregon Book Award winner. Both were published by Arthur A. Levine Books/ Scholastic.
Linda has been an editorial consultant since 1999. As part of her service she provides an in-depth reading of the manuscript and a detailed letter outlining the problems she sees and suggesting solutions. Depending on what the manuscript requires, she may do a close line-edit as well as a letter. Illustrators may send a dummy and a separate manuscript; Linda will make specific comments on both. Linda’s insights into the challenges and satisfactions of writing and illustrating for children are informed by her many years as an editor and her more recent, first-hand experiences as a writer and published author. In keeping with her experience, Linda’s fees are as follows: for a first reading of a picture book text (maximum 8 double-spaced pages) $250.00 for the first hour of her time. Most picture books will not require more, but if they do, the hourly rate is $150.00. Chapter books, middle-grade novels and young adult manuscripts( up to 200 pages) start at $2500. Her usual turnaround time is 8-10 weeks. For more information, please contact Linda by email at lindajz@frontier.com. (No electronic submissions, please.)
