ABOUT LISZE BECHTOLD
I am the author and illustrator of SALLY AND THE PURPLE SOCKS, a Children’s Choice Book which was also included in Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Literacy Program. The award-winning BUSTER THE VERY SHY DOG early reader series has been in print for 20 years. I also illustrated TOOTS THE CAT, written by Karla Kuskin. Currently, I am working on a middle grade novels, as well as several picture books. I volunteer as the Illustrator Coordinator for the Los Angeles region SCBWI, and am an experienced Authors in the Schools presenter. My independently animated film, MOON BREATH BEAT, is in the National Film Registry.
I usually write a story first, then draw it. Sometimes I don’t even have pictures in my head while writing because I’m thinking about the rhythm and musicality of the words. But every once and a while, the story is easier to develop by sketching first. I work with pencil, pen, brush and ink, water color, gouache, and digital media, always striving to preserve the life and emotion of the original sketch. Designing art to match the story is more interesting to me than developing a “recognizable style”. My biggest challenge is finding ways to paint the minimal line way I draw, which has engendered some fun experimentation.
