ABOUT LISZE BECHTOLD
I am an author, illustrator, and animator who writes picture books through middle grade novels. My published work includes Sally and the Purple Socks, a Children’s Choice Book which was also included in Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Literacy Program, and the award-winning Buster the Very Shy Dog early reader series. I also illustrated Toots the Cat: A Collection Of Cat Poems, written by Karla Kuskin. Currently, I volunteer as the Illustrator Coordinator for the Los Angeles SCBWI region. “Moon Breath Beat”, one of my independently animated films, is in the National Film Registry.
I usually write a story first, then draw it. Sometimes I don’t even have pictures in my head while writing because I’m thinking about the rhythm and musicality of the words. But every once and a while, the story is easier to develop by sketching first. I work with pencil, pen, brush and ink, water color, gouache, and digital media, always striving to preserve the life and emotion of the original sketch. I like to design the art to match the story, and am always striving to develop painting methods that suit my drawing style.
