ABOUT MARY MORTON COWAN
-
My biography, CYRUS FIELD’S BIG DREAM: THE DARING EFFORT TO LAY THE FIRST TRANSATLANTIC TELEGRAPH CABLE, is a NSTA Best STEM Book and a Junior Library Guild selection. My earlier biography, CAPTAIN MAC: THE LIFE OF DONALD BAXTER MACMILLAN, ARCTIC EXPLORER, won a National Outdoor Book Award and other honors, and was a finalist in the 2011 SCBWI Crystal Kite Award, New England Region.
I was awarded an SCBWI work-in-progress grant to write TIMBERRR…A HISTORY OF LOGGING IN NEW ENGLAND, which won Maine Library Association’s Lupine Honor Award. Other published works include a historical novel, ICE COUNTRY, and nearly 100 articles, stories and activities in children’s magazines. Several have been reprinted in textbooks, anthologies, reading comprehension programs, and a few are online. Two are published as Readers’ Theater books by Rosen Publishing.
In 2015, I won a NESCBWI Critique Scholarship Award for a picture book manuscript. I live in Maine.
