ABOUT MELINA MANGAL

  • Mélina Mangal is the author of The Vast Wonder of the World: Biologist Ernest Everett Just, which brings the African American scientific pioneer to life in what Kirkus Reviews magazine calls “more than a story of triumph against the odds.”  She has authored biographies on award-winning authors such as Virginia Hamilton and Rita Williams-Garcia as well as short stories anthologized by Milkweed Editions. Mélina also works as a school library media teacher in Minnesota and enjoys spending time outdoors with her family.  

ARTIST STATEMENT

  • Working at the intersection of Nature, Literature, and Culture, my writing highlights youth whose voices are rarely heard, and the people and places that inspire them to explore their world.
