• My debut, HER OWN TWO FEET: A RWANDAN GIRL’S BRAVE FIGHT TO WALK was published by Scholastic October 2019 and won numerous honors and awards including the 2020 Crystal Kite Award for TX/OK region, an NAACP Image Award nominee, starred PW review, and JLG 2020 Winter selection. I became interested in writing for children in 1995 and got a job at a local independent children’s bookstore, Toad Hall, to learn more about the industry. During that time, with the help of Kathi Appelt and others, I started the Austin chapter of SCBWI in 1996. Since then I’ve had three children, written many manuscripts, attended numerous conferences both SCBWI and otherwise, and earned my MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Vermont College in 2011. I am represented by Alyssa Eisner Henkin at Trident Media and write middle grade and picture books. I love living in Austin, Texas, home to so many wonderful writers and illustrators. We have a vibrant community, and our SCBWI chapter is phenomenal. It has grown tremendously under the leadership of some pretty special people.
