ABOUT MIMI CROSS

  • Born in Toronto, Canada, Mimi Cross is an author, singer, and songwriter who grew up in New Jersey by the beach. She received a Bachelor of Music from Ithaca College and an MA in Music Education from NYU with an emphasis on vocal jazz. She is an experienced performer, and worked briefly in the music industry.

“Mimi fuses delicacy and power, heart and gut. Her writing and singing are inspiring and evocative.”
–Grammy award winning artist Rosanne Cash

A two time Asbury Music Award winner, Mimi has shared the bill with such luminaries as Sting, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Lauryn Hill, Loudon Wainwright, and Jill Sobule. She enjoys performing for the benefit of others, and has played shows with many Jersey Shore musicians including Jon Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen. Her songs have been used in independent films and TV shows.

Mimi runs songwriting classes and creative writing classes through several arts organizations, and she is a 200+ hour certified yoga instructor as well as the creator of Body of Writing, a practice that adds an additional dimension to the body-mind-spirit discipline of yoga: story. Body of Writing is designed to help people deepen their creativity and discover their stories through meditation, movement, and writing.

Mimi lives with her son and a Siberian cat nicknamed The Dark Knight. Her debut YA Before Goodbye was an RWA Rita Award finalist for Best First Book. Her second novel, Shining Sea is a fantasy/romance that features a very human seventeen-year-old budding singer-songwriter with the voice of a mythological Siren.

ARTIST STATEMENT

  • As a child, I was a bookworm, and that hasn’t changed. I’m also a musician, and one theme I keep coming back to in my novel writing is the journey of the artist.

An artist’s way is often filled with emotional peril, and I think I would have benefited greatly from reading about characters who travel the shadowy roads that many artists walk at one time or another in order to reach their creative potential. And so I try to write the books that were missing from my formative years as a musician and a writer.

My greatest hope, as far as my writing goes, is that young people, especially young women, will find my books useful as they grow and strive to reach their own creative potential. At the same time, I hope my readers enjoy the fictional worlds and romantic aspects of my novels. While my first two Young Adult books BEFORE GOODBYE and SHINING SEA explore issues that are important to older teens, I also hope that people of all ages find them entertaining!

If you have questions about BEFORE GOODBYE or SHINING SEA or about what I can offer in your classroom or at your conference, please connect with me directly by going to my website, mimicross.com, which also includes descriptions of all my currently available workshops. Thank you!

Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”
