ABOUT SHERYL GWYTHER
-
I’m Sheryl Gwyther, an author from Brisbane, Australia. I write children’s novels, school plays, short stories and articles, chapter books, and Flash Fiction for adults.
I love presenting workshops at schools, libraries, literature festivals, SCBWI Conferences and in-school Writer-Residency programs.
My work-in-progress, SWEET ADVERSITY, a Mid-grade historical adventure set in the Great Depression in Australia was awarded a SCBWI ARA – Work of Outstanding Progress Grant. It’s the first time an Australian has won this award.
I’ve also been a recipient of two Australian Society of Authors’ Mentorships and two May Gibbs Children’s Literature Trust Fellowships.
My role as a SCBWI ARA in Australia allows me to advocate for writers, children’s books and literacy.LATEST NEWS: My middle grade novel, SWEET ADVERSITY will be published by HarperCollins Australia in July 2018.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I have a lifelong passion for art and art history, but it is the Australian landscape that has influenced my art practice. I try to express more than a traditional ‘background, mid-ground and foreground’ exploration of the land because to me, there are s0 many aspects to landscape – memory, history, palaeo-history, geology, geography, contours, aerial, micro and macro and literary observations.
A lot of my work also revels in colour – sometimes, I try to think ‘subtle’, ‘pastel hues’ – but …. well, you see the results.
I’ve never illustrated books – most of my art is on walls. Writing has taken over my creative life, but I’m still drawn to canvas and paper and printing block every now and then.
