• Illustrator Sophie Cayless has drawn and painted since she could hold a
pencil, and is happily pursuing her dream of creating children’s books. She gains a lot of inspiration from nature,
and designed graphics for many parks, including a large Hawaiian wildlife mural and the children’s picture book Beaver Tales (with the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.) She has also illustrated Sophie’s Stuff, and most recently Belle’s Wild Ride
for the Cleveland Museum of Art. Favorite media are acrylic,
    scratchboard and colored pencil.
She also has worked as a naturalist and park ranger, and art teacher.

  • I especially love creating art related to nature, which inspires me at so many times and in so many places.  In children’s books I enjoy the challenge of  illustrating realistically enough to be true to the subject, yet appealing to the younger reader. I also appreciate the richness of colors, a potential part of most of my illustrations.
