ABOUT SUSANNE GERVAY

  • It’s really hard to write a bio that is my life.  My parents were post war refugees who escaped Nazism and Stalinism to make a home in the free world. That drives everything I do. 

    Education:  Master of Arts, Master of Education, Diploma of Education, Bachelor of Arts so I am well qualified as a teacher, educator, with a specialty in child growth and development and educational psychology.
    I have written 16 books from picture books to upper end Young Adult. I have received award along the way and endorsements from a huge range of organisations I value from The Cancer Council, Room to Read, Variety the children’s charity, Life Education Australia, anti bullying organizations, The Children’s Hospital Sydney.
    As an Australian and international speaker, I have crossed the globe from India, Singapore, Brussels, London, Kiribati, Tel Aviv to New York sharing the power of story to engage and open discussions on the core issues of our time – racism, inclusion, community, literacy, justice.

ARTIST STATEMENT

  • Awarded Lifetime Social Justice Literature Award by the International Literacy Association, Order of Australia (OAM), nominee for Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, you’ll find me in Istanbul speaking on NO bullying with my  I Am Jack books; advocating for UN Vision 2020 sight campaign with The Boy in the Big Blue Glasses for Vision Australia; in New York at the World Burn Congress speaking on inclusion with Butterflies (disability); advocating for equality with Daisy Sunshine (feminism for kids) and Shadows of Olive Trees (feminism YA) on International Woman’s Day; promoting harmony with picture books Elephants Have Wings. 

    Heroes of the Secret Underground is a special book in the theme of Diary of Anne Frank which is part autobiography, history, philosophy and fantasy that challenges young people to become heroes of justice. 

    All my books from picture books to new Young Adult are driven by overcoming adversity to find hope and a belief in the future.

    I am committed to the children’s book industry, literacy, reading and education for all children. My roles mean a lot to me and include Writers Ambassador for Room to Read, Role Model for Books in Homes, patron Monkey Baa Theatre, Australia Day Ambassador, former President of the Society of Women Writers … and of course I am totally committed to SCBWI which I have served as a RT and RA for more than 20 years. www.sgervay.com
