ABOUT TANITA DAVIS
I’ve always wanted to write, and while I very much enjoyed teaching, I was proud to realize my dream at Mills College in 2004 with an MFA in English and Creative Writing. I contracted with Knopf in 2007 for A LA CARTE. Next came MARE’S WAR, a Notable Social Studies Trade Books for Young People, 2010, a Coretta Scott King Honor Award book, as well as a Junior Library Guild selection and an Amelia Bloomer Award book.
HAPPY FAMILIES, a 2013 ALA Rainbow List selection, was published May 2012. PEAS & CARROTS was published in 2016. SERENA SAYS is being published in 2020, PARTLY CLOUDY will be published in 2021 and GO FIGURE, HENRI WELDON, will be published in 2022 by Katherine Tegen Books.
I’m represented by Stephen Chudney of The Chudney Agency, New York.
In whatever genre I find myself writing in, I want to honor Dr. Rudine Sims-Bishop’s idea of creating windows, mirrors, and sliding doors with my narrative, to a world where diversity – cultural, religious, ethnic, gender, racial, ability – is normalized. I want to hold up a mirror, so readers can see not just their faces, but the faces behind them in the mirror. I hope to have created, for others, sliding doors, so that they remember where they came from – and get a little help with going where they’re headed.
