Narrative Art Award Winner Announced

The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators is proud to present Druscilla Santiago with the 2021 Narrative Art Award. The award, judged by a rotating panel of experts, honors illustrators who show excellence incorporating narrative sequence and storytelling in their work.

This year’s assignment was to submit a narrative sequence based on the theme, “Be careful what you wish for.

Judges Paul O. Zelinsky, Pat Cummings, and Cecilia Yung had this to say about their choice:

Druscilla Santiago uses a simple graphic style to tell the story of a bear who leaves the tropics for the big city, with a less-than-ideal outcome. Her varied compositions bring out the emotional content of the four panels, controlling the focus and the movement in each, and a transition in color temperature expresses the dramatic change in actual temperature without even changing the delicate limited palette. Despite their simple stylization, Santiago’s characters retain subtlety and nuance, especially her comically droll and sympathetic protagonist, the oversized bear.

Santiago will receive free tuition to the SCBWI Winter Conference, where her work will be highlighted as part of the Portfolio Showcase.
