On November 17, SCBWI attended the 2017 National Council of Teachers of English Annual Convention in St. Louis, MO for the first time as an exhibitor. From our booth on the convention floor, we networked with a wonderful community of educators from all around the country and facilitated book signings with our members Laurie Halse Anderson, Ellen Hopkins, Emma Otheguy, Lisa Yee, and Melissa Stewart. This was a big hit among teachers, who waited in long lines to meet the authors in person. Also popular was the 2017 SCBWI Reading List, which we handed out on customized flash drives. The SCBWI distributed over 700 of these flash drives, which featured new books by hundreds of SCBWI authors and illustrators.
Marketing director Tammy Brown described the event as “an opportunity to meet English teachers from all across the country, from elementary school through high school, and tell them about our PAL members and the books they’ve written and illustrated. We wanted them to know that the SCBWI can be their ally in getting books into the hands of kids.”
Many teachers went home with an SCBWI button, tote bag, or luggage tag, as well as a new understanding of what our organization can do.
