THE HUNGRY PLACE
Jessie Haas
Synopsis
Princess, a champion show pony, falls on hard times. Rae, a girl with a spine of steel--and not much money--dreams and works for the pony she plans to have one day. When Rae and Princess meet, it isn't love at first sight, but love grows. Is love enough?
School Library Journal says, "Deep inside, people are hungry for a place of refuge that will help to make them feel complete; for Rae and Princess that place is filled by their love for each other. VERDICT A sweet story of longing, determination, and healing that will appeal to readers who enjoy tales of friendship and horses."

From the Author
This story has been in the works for a dozen years. Persistence paid off when it finally found the editor, Rebecca M. Davis, who understood what it needed. What an honor to have someone cry over your story, and still push you to make it even stronger--and then give it the most beautiful cover ever.
The Horn Book (review still subject to edits) said, "Tender-hearted readers will weep at Princess's peril, and even more, her loneliness...Readers' sympathetic agony is replaced with tears of happiness as Haas brings the story around to a rousing, happily-ever-after ending."
Jessie Haas grew up on a small farm in southern Vermont. Passionate about horses, she read all the horse books in the local libraries, then read them again, and again. At some point it became clear that there needed to be more horse stories, and someone had to write them. She sold her first middle-grade novel, KEEPING BARNEY, a month before graduating from Wellesley. She has written over 40 books since then, with a focus on horses and history. SHAPER won the Golden Kite Honor Award; two nonfiction books won the American Horse Publications book award;
