Illustrator and Writer
Aśka is an illustrator, artist and scientist, and has loved to draw since she was small. Once a PhD candidate researching quantum optics, she turned her hand back to art with the goal of being a children’s book illustrator.
She has experience in graphic design and character illustration and had her numerous comics published in Perth and Melbourne. She was also featured on an ABC TV documentary, Noise On Screen, along with 11 other young Australian artists.
Graduating from Curtin University with a Bachelor of Arts in 2011, she won a Curtin Gallery Grant to create works for an exhibition where she combined her passion for maths, science and art, called 13-Our Faith in Numbers. She also created a number of short animated films, and with a City of Perth grant she run Animators Hour, an independent animation festival showcasing local and international animation talent on the Northbridge Piazza Superscreen in 2012.
Her professional work presenting science programs and workshops for Scitech across of the Western Australia reignited her passion for the story telling of science. The March 2017 launch of The Cosmic Adventures of Alice and Bob was Aśka’s first big illustration project. Written by Cristy Burne, it is a science comic book for children, sponsored by CAASTRO (Australia’s team of all-sky astronomers).
A further two of her illustrative projects have been published in 2017: Pepsi the Problem Puppy, by Sandi Parsons (Faraway Nearby Ink), and Looking Up by Sally Murphy (Fremantle Press); both fiction for young readers. She won a Department of Culture and the Arts grant in 2017 from the State Government of Western Australia for the development of a picture book about dyslexia, written by Paul Russell, to be published in 2018.
In all of her illustrations, Aśka loves to create energetic characters with a curious streak - the best type of friend to take on an adventure uncovering the wonderfully diverse and inspiring world around us.
Aśka has a number of other author/ illustrator projects in the pipeline, so visit her website for their arrival! www.askaillustration.com
