Christine Mix drew and painted, played with clay, wrote poems and stories, as a child.
She studied art at Coker College, in Hartsville, S.C. for one year and then headed to Florida, where she received an Art Scholarship for painting, at Hillsborough Community College in Tampa. While at college, she also studied sculpture, photography, cinematography and theatre arts. It was just after Christine graduated from the University of South Florida in 1988, with a B.A. in Fine Arts and another B.A. in Mass Communications, that she painted her first children's illustration in watercolor, titled Spike & Wordo's Magical Wish. Hence, Spike the Dragon was born and Christine realized she had found her niche in art and her future!
Christine's illustrations have appeared in several Vermont newspapers, such as on the Cover of Section B in Seven Days, (Burlington, VT.,) Front Page Gallery, Dec. 15-22, 2004. Her b/w spot illustrations have appeared in SCBWI's Bulletin in 2005, 2009, 2010, and she has one color spot illustration, published in Stories for Children Magazine, Back- to- School- Issue, 2012, and so far, one children's book, Write Out of the Oven! by Josephine Waltz, published by Teacher Ideas Press/Greenwood Publishing, 2005. Write Out of the Oven! personally connects children in grades 5-8 with their favorite literary heroes! A collection of letters and recipes from more than 50 well-known and award-winning children's authors. Write Out of the Oven! Received a nice review from the Parents Choice Foundation Bon Appetite Reading List. In 2009, one of her illustrations, "Twilight Magic, was on the cover of the Journal of the Annual Manchester & the Mountains Poets and Writers Weekend, published by Shire Press, Manchester, Vt.. As a children's author, Christine has one non-fiction short true story, Standing Up, that has been published, in Chicken Soup for the Child's Soul Character-Building Stories to Read with Kids Ages 5-8, May 2007. She is currently working on her first children's picture book.
Christine is a member of CBIG-NY, and a Juried Teaching Artist with the Verermont Art Council. Visit her website at www.christinemixart.com for more information.
Christine Mix is a Teaching Artist, listed on the Vermont Arts Council's Teaching Artist Roster for 2018, for Illustration / Cartoon Residencies.
Her colorful presentations, along with fun drawing & writing exercises, helps children weave their imagination with literacy and art. Children and adults learn how to visualize their own stories, or their favorite classic tale, and turn those ideas into sketches and illustrated stories! Everyone has the ability to create, somewhere deep down inside them, and by applying one’s imagination to a visual picture of a story, the imagination process can be integrated into all subjects, curriculums, in education, as well as, the community. Finding the joy of creating in a fun environment, not only helps students gain confidence, while learning to express themselves, it also opens doors to the heart and adventure, that the child or adult never thought possible.
Watercolor, drawing, acrylic painting, art career workshops, portfolio development, and other fun art programs are also available for kids of all ages.
