Animals Spell Love is my debut children's book, following my long career in the graphic arts. I've designed type at Linotype in New York, and with the renowned type designer Matthew Carter in London. I was a protégé of Paul Rand at Yale. My graphic design firm, Design Trust, has created graphics for many major organizations, including the Brooklyn Museum, Columbia University and Parsons School of Design. I've served on the board of directors of the New York Chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts, and I've taught in Yale's graduate graphic design program. Most recently, I've taught about media at Fairfield University. My studio is on the Town Green in Guilford, Connecticut, where I welcome SCBWI member visits!
You may visit my author's pages at the David R. Godine (my publisher's) website here and at the Betsy Amster Literary Enterprises (my agent Mary Cummings's) website here.
My presentations are hands-on events for children. First, I present Animals Spell Love. Next, children create their own "wordpictures" using letterforms. Variations include:
a. the creation of valentines by making pictures using the letters in the word "LOVE" and "I LOVE YOU" in English and/or languages chosen by the children.
b. the creation of a self-portrait by each child using the letters in that child's name,
c. the creation of pictures of pets (actual or imagined) using the letters in the selected pet's name, and
d. the creation of pictures of animals by using and connecting letters that suggest ears (e.g., M, U, V and W), eyes (e.g., e and o), etc.
Paper and crayons will be provided.
