Illustrator and Writer

I grew up on the outskirts of a small harbor town in the wet wilds of western Washington (meaning I can handle the rain). I have since ventured to the east side of the state where there is just as much adventure but much less slopping around in soggy shoes.
I had the great fortune of being raised on a small farm where my parents allowed me to run amuck. I was not one for dresses and, if forced into such a contraption, it was muddied within moments of stepping outside. Much of my inspiration comes from this childhood filled with catching frogs, chasing wild rabbits in the barn and teaching chickens to swim (sorry Nancy for traumatizing your prize hen).
All this freedom as a child led me to telling stories. In college, I tried my hand at writing and drawing comic strips which led to meeting a collection of characters that begged to have their own stories. I went on to study creative writing for children at Spalding University, earning my MFA. I also hold a graduate certificate in illustrating children's books from Hollins University. I'm delighted to be a member of SCBWI and Julie Hedlund's 12 x 12 Picture Book Challenge, which has pushed my storytelling to new levels.
