You can take the girl out of Texas, they say. But you can't take the Texas out of the girl. Truer words have never been spoken when it comes to the person I am. Born and raised in the Lone Star State, I will always be a Texan at heart. But went to high school in California, college in Utah, raised my children in Colorado and finally settled in Spokane, Washington. So I have a passion for destinations beyond.
I was a wild child in Texas, a student of all things weird and wonderful. And the same is true today. My roots are deep, but so is the reach of my endless curiosity. My life as a writer for young readers has proven, there is a place for everyone on this earth -- even those who once felt they'd never fit in. If I'm lucky, I'll be able to share that message for the rest of my life. We are exactly who we're meant to be. And we are never truly alone, as long as we have access to writers and books.
I have done more than 400 school visits in the past ten years and the experience has taught me how to offer engaging, entertaining presentations that excite and inspire.
WONDERS OF WEIRD is the title of my presentation series -- each especially created to be age appropriate -- K-1st, 2nd-3rd,4th-5th, and 6th-8th. All four herald the value of research by way of high interest speculative topics designed to engage your readers and writers to search for facts of their own. Critical thinking is all but guaranteed, making my school visit offering very, very Common Core friendly -- and even more fun.
Via discussions of Bigfoot, U.F.O.s, Ghosts, dinosaurs and the magic of animal investigations, we explore the magic of credible research and the importance of digging deep to reveal the mysteries of the natural world. It is fun, high spirited and sure to please all students, including reluctant readers.
I can also offer writing workshops on a number of high interest topics.
