Michelle Houts is the author of picture books and middle-grade titles, both fiction and nonfiction. She writes in a restored 1894 one-room schoolhouse. She's a contributing blogger on The Mixed-Up Files of Middle-Grade Authors. Michelle has degrees in special education and speech-language pathology. She loves connecting with young readers and writers at school and library visits, encouraging interest in STEM topics and storytelling.
Michelle speaks to children in elementary and middle school about her writing and theirs. She shares the first story she ever wrote (yes, her mother kept it ALL these many, many years!). With the youngest children, she shows slides from her family farm and talks about how stories come from real life. With older students, she talks about the editing process and how a story evolves from an author's idea to a book on a shelf. With all children, she shares how characters develop and where she finds inspiration. Michelle shares a poignant and inspiring real life story about a young man she once knew and challenges students to treat others with respect and to speak out when others do not.
