Bio:

Rachel Kolar is the author of Mother Ghost: Nursery Rhymes for Little Monsters, as well as several science fiction, fantasy, and horror short stories for adults. A graduate of Kenyon College, Rachel lives with her husband and children in the Baltimore/Washington area. When she isn't writing, she enjoys hiking, playing overly complicated board games, and getting far too excited about Halloween.

Presentation Description:

My school visits typically include a 20-minute story time with props for children from preschool to grade 2, as well as a Q&A session for children on the older end of the scale. I also have two presentations that I can tailor to various elementary-age students:

What’s It Like To Be An Author? (45 minutes): A “career-day” style presentation about what an author’s job is like. This presentation describes a typical day in the life of an author before explaining the many, many steps in the publishing process, from a manuscript on the computer to a published book. Those steps take a long time and are sometimes out of the author’s control, so patience and perseverance are crucial!

The Writing Process (45 minutes): Students learn the writing process, from prewriting to publishing—but they may not know that authors use the same steps! This presentation details how authors brainstorm and organize their ideas, create rough drafts, revise and edit, and share their stories with the world—just like students! No author’s rough drafts are perfect, and the revising process can be long and frustrating for everyone—but with hard work and revision, even a so-so rough draft can become a superb final copy.

I am happy to work with you to customize a presentation to your school’s needs as well!

I live in the Baltimore/Washington area, but am happy to do out-of-state visits via Skype.
