In honor of Tomie dePaola, the legendary children’s book author and illustrator and long-time member of the SCBWI Advisory Council, the ILF is proud to announce the Tomie dePaola Professional Development Award. Open specifically to early career illustrators, the first place artist will win a cash prize $3,500 and the runner up $1,500. The money can be used to advance professional artistic development and growth, and can include items such as supplies, equipment, research, learning experiences, travel, creative sabbaticals, child care, or any legitimate expenses that allow the winners to develop or improve their art. Applicants should have published at least one but no more than three books.

With a career that spanned five decades and over 250 children’s books to his name, Tomie dePaola was and remains deeply beloved in the children’s book community. His art has inspired generations of illustrators to pursue their craft with creativity and passion. We are honored to include this award in the roster of grants administered by the SCBWI Impact and Legacy Fund.
