Two SCBWI Grants for Self-Publishing Authors Open October 1

  

As part of our new slate of benefits for independently published authors, SCBWI is launching TWO all-new grant programs for members who have either recently self-published a children’s book or plan to do so in the coming year. The submission period for both grants is October 1-November 15, 2021. Winners will be announced on January 15, 2022.

 

Grant #1

The Independently Published Book Launch Award provides authors and author/illustrators with $2,500 in funds to help with the promotion of their newly self-published work. Two grants are offered annually. One grant is reserved specifically for a book creator from an underrepresented community.

To be eligible for this grant, you must be a current SCBWI member when your work is submitted and when the award is announced.  SCBWI members with a book self-published in 2021 are eligible to apply.

 

Money from the grant may be used to promote your book including, but not limited to:

– Launch events

– Speaking engagements and book tours

-Curriculum materials

-Advertising, posters, postcards, and other promotional marketing materials

-Book trailers

-Website development

-Book donations to local schools and libraries

-School visits

 

Grants will be awarded based on:

-Strong marketing and implementation plan

-Demonstrated need

-Quality and professionalism of your synopsis

 

Winners must use the money in the first calendar year and provide SCBWI with documentation of grant money use.  For more information and to submit your grant application, click HERE.

 

 

Grant #2

The Pre-publication grant for self-publishing authors is awarded annually and provides $2,500 to help off-set the price of self-publishing.

 

To be eligible for this award, you must be a current SCBWI member when your work is submitted and when the award is announced.

 

Money from the grant must be used to self-publish your book, including but not limited to:

-Hiring illustrators

-Hiring content editors, proofreaders, and copyeditors

-Hiring book designers

-Book trailers

-Website development

-Printing and shipping costs

-Publishing software

 

Grants will be awarded based on:

-Quality and professionalism of your synopsis

-Strength of your business plan

 

PLEASE INCLUDE IN YOUR SUBMISSION: 

A brief cover letter with the name of your proposed book, a 1-2 paragraph synopsis, your publication timeline, a short bio, a 1-page business plan of how the grant money will used, and 2-3 sentences about why you have chosen to self-publish this book.
