This year, the SCBWI ILF is initiating a brand new grant program! The Independent Bookstore Grant connects bookstore owners with children’s book creators to put on events, by giving a grant of $1,000 each to three wonderful bookstores across the United States. We chose to support independent bookstores because, as an organization made up of writers, illustrators, translators, editors, and so many others who bring children’s books into the world, we wanted to support the booksellers who support us. They play a vital role in our publishing ecosystem, and we want to make sure they survive. It’s essential to do our part to help keep independent bookstores viable in the age of e-commerce.
So, without further ado, here are the first three recipients of the pilot Independent Bookstore Grant:
Hudson Valley Books for Humanity, New York
This incredible bookstore serves the diverse, multilingual community of Hudson Valley. They follow a “slow” business model that strives to balance the needs of their community and the needs of the planet. Their village takes great pride in welcoming newcomers, and honoring their rich history!
Rooted Books and Gifts, Nebraska
Rooted is committed to igniting a love of reading in the town of Grand Island, which hasn’t had a bookstore in ten years! They are a place where people can read, expand, and learn how to be better neighbors so their community can be one where all can flourish. Rooted Books & Gifts aims to be a haven for the outsider and is committed to fighting bigotry in all facets of society.
Honest Dog Books, Wisconsin
This very rural bookstore has deep connections with local schools and families. As a family-run business, they carefully select new and used titles, and work hard to bring wonderful authors to their small town. Check out their wonderfully curated booklists for inspiration!
We are so excited to support these bookstores, and to see their events and connections with children’s book creators flourish.
And if you find yourself in Ossining, Grand Island, or Bayfield, don’t hesitate to stop in and fill your own shelves with books from these fantastic bookshops!
