What the Moon Said

Esther is in for a lot of changes when her father loses his job early in the Great Depression and her family moves from an apartment in Chicago to a ramshackle farm in Wisconsin. But they're mostly good changes and Esther is always up for a good adventure. But as life gets harder, Ma's superstitious beliefs increasingly take over the family's life--Esther's in particular--until she is left wondering if Ma is right to believe in signs and superstitions when so many of them seem to make life scarier and harder and sadder than it already is.
