Jennifer Maruno
Twelve-year-ole Sumi, a Japanese Canadian girl living in Vancouver in 1927, takes her older sister's place working at Gibson's Landing sot that Yoshi can go to dressmaking school. Dealing with unfamiliar customs and the racism of the time makes Sumi want to give up and go home until she becomes involved as a "go-between" in supporting striking Japanese workers at the local factory.
